My Makeup Bag Inventory Checklist

Hey Friend!

Are you the type that has all of your beauty products in a cosmetic bag tossed under the bathroom sink or are you the type that has an organized basket on your bathroom sink? I’m not here to judge your organizing skills but I’m just curious because I often hear from clients and friends that they have no idea what’s in their makeup bag anymore. They have some things that they know and love, but there’s a bunch of stuff that they bought, didn’t like, but kept because they already paid good money for it. And that, I completely understand because I am not one for wasting money either. But then I have some clients that have items they like but still feel like something’s still missing but they’re not sure what it is or where to start.

Regardless of where you keep your makeup bag, the real question is do you know what’s in it?  Seriously friend, have you ever done an inventory on your makeup bag to see if you’ve got the basics covered? Do you have what you need and not just a bunch of stuff for the sake of having stuff? If you haven’t done an inventory, I highly recommend it. An inventory helps you to know what you have, what needs to be trashed, and what needs to be added. When doing an inventory,  I usually take the approach of checking off these 6 categories below.

I always like to start with skincare because if you get your skincare right, you’re winning!  Everything starts with good skincare. Take care of your skin, and I promise she’ll take care of you and your makeup will cooperate.

Next, I consider if I have complexion products. These are products that add and correct color to your skin. So items like foundation, concealer, color corrector and finishing powders fall into this category.  Whether you're a barely there lady or a full face makeup lady you want to make sure you have the right complexion products in your bag.

Then comes the eyes. You can have the largest eyeshadow palette or one single color, it’s up to you. Or maybe you want to skip eyeshadow all together and go for liner and mascara.  That’s fine too, I just recommend having something that helps to accentuate your eyes and let them shine.

I love blush! Bronzer is cute too, but I’ll grab a blush first every time. You may love bronzer. Both are great and add great color and add a bit of definition to your face. Blush and bronzer can enhance your smile by accentuating your cheeks, giving you a glow, or adding back your natural flush which can be lost when you apply foundation.

The last item I usually apply is my lip product. I like to start off with a lip moisturizer and then apply lipstick or lip gloss. Nobody likes dry lips. Nope, not one. I always recommend topping off your look with a lip product of your choice to bring it all together.

The last and final item in this inventory is your tools. Now you may be thinking, “why did you start off with the tools?” Well I didn’t start with tools because usually tools are the things that are purchased last and given little thought. We’re usually more focused on the product and now how we’re going to apply it. But I recommend considering taking a look at what tools you’re using to apply your makeup because tools can make a difference in how your finished product turns out.  Brushes, sponges, eyelash curlers, tweezers, jade rollers, etc. all  play a role in creating your look.

So I’m asking again friend, what’s in your makeup bag? Take a look and see if you have something from each of these 6 categories. If you do, you’re doing great! I want to encourage you to keep up the good work.  If you don’t have something from each of these 6 categories, what’s missing?
